A. A certified diamond is one that has been precisely graded for the 4-C's (carat, color, cut, clarity) by an independent gem-grading laboratory. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is among the most well-respected in the US and internationally.
Q. Do all gem-grading laboratories have the same standards?
A. All gem laboratories use the same standardized terminology but some grade more strictly than others.
Q. What is a graduate gemologist?
A. The designation "Graduate Gemologist" is given only to those who have fulfilled all the training and met the comprehensive requirements: the study of diamonds, colored gemstones, gemstone grading and gem identification.
Q. Do I need to have my jewelry appraised?
A. Yes, both for identification and insurance purposes.
Q. How often should I have my jewelry appraisal updated?
A. Appraisals are written to be valid for a limited period of time. Prices for certain colored stones for example, can change dramatically from year to year. Values of certain other items tend to fluctuate with the inflation rate. It is recommended to have your jewelry appraisal updated every three years.
